Is something missing from your creative life?
It’s no fun to feel down about your creativity. And unfortunately, it’s too common for artists and creative professionals to feel doubtful, fearful, or unclear about their work, its future and its worth — or to be just plain stuck. As you know, this doesn’t help you feel any more creative, doesn’t further your career and doesn’t make you a happy person either.
It’s not just you.
Whether you have been wishing for something more, are missing a feeling of fulfillment or have completely ground to a halt, you are not alone. Really. Artists and creatives hesitate to share their concerns about their creativity with eachother, so it’s tempting to think that it comes easier for others, but that’s just not true. We do lose our way and doubt ourselves; we do get stuck. And sometimes we bump repeatedly up against our own limits, our own personal blend of inner obstacles that affect creative work. You thought you dealt with all that unconscious stuff, but maybe not.
It really can become everything you want.
Artists and creatives are happiest when productive, feeling alive and freely drawing on inspiration and curiosity. It’s truly wonderful to be able to trust your creativity, to bring your ideas into reality and then to share them with others without constraint. When the possibilities are limitless and creation is a joy, your career is more satisfying — life is just better!
To work better & feel better, here’s what you can do:
Inner obstacles can sabotage a fulfilling creative life without your even knowing it. Once you are aware of this, you can begin changing your situation by taking a closer look at your situation. Can you pinpoint exactly how and when the limits to your creativity appear?
- What does it feel like to be in your situation now?
- Is there a place in your process where you get bogged down?
- Do you feel like you don’t even know what your process is?
- Is there a part of your practice that has lost its luster? Is no fun anymore?
- Is there something you are avoiding doing?
- Do you no longer have a practice?
- What do you do instead of doing what you want?
- What do you tell yourself when you make a creative u-turn?
Now, ask yourself what these patterns can tell you about the part of you that has been shouting out for change by showing up in this unhelpful way? What can they tell you about a solution to the need for change? These issues may hold the keys to a new happier creative experience.
If you have some techniques for “going there” with art (intuitive collages or paintings, spontaneous movement or vocal work, free writing or drawing, etc.), invite those issues to be explored. Ask these seemingly-negative issues for their help and see what better way is becoming possible now as you move forward into a new phase of creative life.
